How do I Become an Autopsy Technician?
Most offices require a minimum of a high school diploma to be considered for employment, though some offices require up to a Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as criminal justice, biology, or forensic sciences. The best approach is to start with an internship at a reputable office to begin building your resume and skill sets as most offices want to hire the most qualified candidate for the job with the best cultural fit to their office. Having a strong work ethic and professional demeanor will get you far in the field!
What classes or certifications do I need to become an autopsy technician?
Most of our full-time staff hold education in biology, criminology, forensic science, anthropology, chemistry, or other related scientific field. Some courses that may be helpful would include anatomy, general biology, and forensic photography. Working knowledge of anatomical terms and medical language is a plus. Keep in mind, this role also includes attention to detail, excessive cleaning, and biological precautions.
NAFAT is working diligently to create member certification opportunities which will include a student certification for those who have completed a certified internship program.
There is also an autopsy assistant certificate offered through MOTT Community College in Flint, Michigan but our association is still reviewing their program. More information can be accessed at their website.
If you are interested in study abroad, Istanbul, Turkey also offers a two year autopsy technician certification program which includes learning the Turkish language and history.
