Forensic Entomology is comprised of three branches which include:
- Stored Product Entomology (defect action levels, fraudulent claims of defect action levels)
- Urban Entomology (neglect and myiasis, insects in homes/dwellings, misuse of pesticides)
- Medicocriminal Entomology (insects and death, neglect and abuse).
Urban Forensic Entomology
Urban Forensic Entomology often incorporates insects found in stored food product or within homes and may lead to litigation between individuals or corporations. This branch of entomology often involves insects not observed in the necrophagous aspects of medicocriminal entomology. This branch of forensic entomology works mainly under civil law and may result in compensation being awarded to the victim. An example of this type of case would be a tenant filing against a landlord who has failed to disclose or mitigate a bed bug infestation of their building.
